The law of attraction as the secret of existence

As this book concentrates primarily on the law of attraction it might be helpful to make it clear from the outset, to avoid any confusion for the reader, that this law has no relation to Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation.
Before entering into an analytical approach it might be valuable to look at a brief history of what has become to be known as the law of attraction.
Use any internet search engine to research a subject and you will immediately be confronted with the surfeit of material that can be found on the Web, something that would have been impossible to contemplate only a dozen or so years ago.
This astonishing phenomenon means that not only can we find limitless resources to support a personal thesis but, within minutes, find an equally rich source of opposing opinions that could support its antithesis.
This is why, if we spend an equal amount of time researching the antithesis as well as our thesis, it would be quite logical to assume that, if the possibility of a synthesis exists, we cannot help but reach an analytical conclusion.
While setting out on my research of the law of attraction I first considered following the traditional academic course; that was until, I became astonished and excited to discover, that up until now, no academic studies or resources existed. What was more, there was not even an accepted definition of the law to be found.
Most striking of all was, that of the nineteen researchers brought together in Rhonda Byrne’s book The Secret, while all struggling to find a definition to the dynamic universal secrets of the law of attraction, there was not one who could go any further than to add their weight to the view that there was more than a little substance to the law itself.

Why did some of the greatest thinkers of all time, like Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Henry Ford and Andrew Carnegie, while reaping the benefits of using the Secret, never question what the law of attraction was?
Perhaps the inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell, best summed it up : “I can’t say what the Secret could be. The only thing I can say is that it exists.”

In order to set about this task, at the outset of my research I collected various references to the law of attraction from internet sources.

‘…the term, “The Law of Attraction”, although being used frequently by esoteric thinkers in a variety of sources, appears not to share a common definition…
…in spite of this, all New Age thinkers are in agreement on one point which is that, in the law of attraction, ‘like attracts like’ and consequently the principal of obtaining what you aspire to by concentrating your thought on the object of your desire…
…this means that, with the individual’s conscious and sub-conscious thought and their feelings and belief, the physical world around them can be irrevocably changed, but this can also mean that the outcome can be as easily negative as it is positive, and that this can all come about without the individual even being aware of it…
…its apparently materialistic nature and the statements made on the law of attraction by its practitioners has left it open to criticism…
…the proponents of the law of attraction and the use of it’s definition by New Age thinkers and esotericists as a ‘law’ is often criticized as not being based on sufficient scientific evidence…
…when looking at the historical development of the law of attraction it is clear that the ideas and beliefs behind it are far from being new…
…it is possible to find resonances of the law of attraction in Hinduism and also in the Hinduism influenced Theosophy…
…law of attraction was first coined by Helena Blavatsky in 1877 in her first esoteric work titled: Isis Unveiled: Secrets of the Ancient Wisdom Tradition. The phrase first appeared in the media as early as 1879 when it was used in an article in the New York Times on the 6th April discussing the Colorado Gold Rush and the attraction of the prospectors to their fortune….
…in 1902 James Allen (1864-1912) referred to the principal of the law of attraction without using that term in his work titled As a Man Thinketh…
In the preface to his book, Allen quotes from the OT Book of Proverbs 23:7 ‘For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.’ Which, put another way, could mean you are what you think…
…in 1906, William Walker Atkinson (1862-1932) used the term in his New Thought Movement book Thought Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World…
…Atkinson was at the same time editor of New Thought Magazine as well as being a student of Hinduism and author of over a hundred books on religion, spiritualism and the occult…
…more recently the release of The Secret (2006) film and the subsequent book have raised interest in the subject to new heights…
…this increased even more when the film, book and author were featured on top rating television shows such as ‘Saturday Night Live’ and the ‘Oprah Winfrey Show’…
…in September 2006 Hay House published Esther Hicks The Law of Attraction which went straight into the New York Times bestsellers list…
…again, in 2006, another book on the law of attraction that proved equally successful was Beth and Lee McCain’s The Grateful Life: Living the Law of Attraction…
…for many of the people who accepted the law of attraction the basis of their destiny became the cosmos and its laws and thereby the means to change the course of their lives…
…this is why the laws of nature could not just be appeared proved by scientific evidence alone and why the law of attraction had to be considered in the light the laws of Karma and even the Ten Commandments, in other words non scientific evidence had to be taken into consideration…
…this point of view is particular prevalent amongst the New Thought and New Age adherents…
…the common understanding amongst the New Thought is that, in order to benefit from the law of attraction, positive affirmation and expressions must be used…
…the proponents of this new approach to the law of attraction argue that Quantum physics is at the heart of this law…
…put simply, they propose that as cognitive process produces energy, this energy attracts the energy that it resembles…’

We can only set out in the direction that this information describes from our own perspective and thereby attempt to reach the secret of life that is the secret of the law of attraction itself by investigating the question of ‘what is the Secret’s Secret Secret?’
There is not a living person who does not want their journey through this life to pass in health, success and happiness, that being so we can do no better than to be fully armed with an extensive knowledge of what the ‘secret of life’ is.

The synthesis of our research:

The secret of life is the ‘law of attraction’.
The Secret’s Secret is ‘resonance’
The Secret’s Secret Secret is ‘to love yourself’.

We will deal with each of these subjects in more detail presently, but we should be aware that the ‘law of attraction’ has also been defined as the ‘law of similars’.
This is the concept of ‘like attracting like’. Or, as we will see in more detail, the result all of our actions will, sooner or later, come back to us. One way or another, the instigator of any given action will receive their positive or negative reward.
This law is as true for health as it is for success and happiness; it is one of the most miraculous fundamentals of the universe and can be of vital assistance to us.
Thoughts are a form of energy that have magnetic properties, they also form the basis of the law of attraction. When we think of something we are setting up a field of attraction. Every thought represents a measure of energy that has its own frequency of resonance. These resonances are exactly the same as radio waves in the way that they are transmitted into the ether where a receiver tuned into the same frequency can attract them.
Every thought that is transmitted must return to its source, that is, to us.
In other words, positive thinking will attract positivity, negative thinking negativity.
Somebody who does not love or who is not at peace with themselves can only produce positive thoughts of a momentary duration.
However, if one wants this to be a permanent state of affairs and to continually transmit positive energy, then we must love ourselves. And when we achieve this, and as long as we maintain this autogenous love, our lives become a series of miracles!

Loving ourselves cannot be equated with egoism and selfishness. On the contrary, some of the most noticeable effects of loving oneself is the appreciation of others; its other benefits include being at peace with oneself and others and being able to forgive and love others, just to mention but a few.

Only in this situation can we transmit positive energy to other people and those around us and control the law of attraction so that positive events and feelings always return to us.
To summarize, the secret of this book , in other words, the secret of the law of attraction is ‘resonance’ and the secret of resonance is to ‘love yourself’.
